This project was the second phase of multiphased improvements to the Rio Hondo and San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds located in the City of Pico Rivera. This phase improved access into the Spreading Grounds for passive recreational use and included a ¾ mile long greenbelt with native planting, trails, enhanced rest areas, interpretive signage, and security lighting. This $2.2 million construction cost was within the County’s budget. Sustainable practices utilized: •Native and drought tolerant plants •Decomposed granite for walkway •Recycled materials •Grouped plants with similar water needs

Installed moisture sensors in irrigation system

Encouraged watering without run off Other goals included:

  • Enhanced landscaping

  • Design inviting rest areas

  • Create interpretive signage

  • Install security lighting
